When looking into adding solar panels to your home, it is likely that you will run into the term “net metering”. But what is net metering? How does it work? And most importantly, how does it save you money?
What is Net Metering?
Net metering is like a tradeoff between you and your utility company. It allows you to send excess energy back to the power grid in return for credit. This credit is equal to the full price of electricity and can be used when your system is not producing or is underproducing.
How Does it Work?
Solar panels produce the most power in the middle of the day when the sun is highest and brightest. But the middle of the day is often the time of day when we use the least amount of power. All of the unused energy produced during the middle of the day is sent to the grid.
How it Saves You Money?
We use the most amount of power at night when the panels are producing the least. This is why net metering plays an essential role in your solar energy system. At night or on cloudy days when the system is underproducing, you can use the credit you’ve built up to pull energy back from the grid. Net metering offsets the cost of electricity and greatly reduces or eliminates your electricity bill.
